One of our customer operates two Unisign machines: a UNIVERS5 and a UNIPORT6. Both machines were delivered in 1999 and are used daily. Since last year, there has been a less than optimal situation with the UNIPORT6 machine.
The original screen had not been functioning for some time anymore, leading operators to use an externally connected screen to operate the machine. While this solution worked, it did not fully meet the requirements for user-friendliness and reliability, especially since the control system is now 25 years old and some parts are no longer available.
Solution
Unisign was requested to perform a retrofit of the control system for the UNIPORT6 machine. In early 2025, after thorough preparation, this retrofit project was executed by Unisign Services.
The project included the following tasks:
- Replacement of the control panel: Installation of a new panel with a larger, more user-friendly screen.
- NCU replacement: Replacement of the outdated Numerical Control Unit (NCU) with a modern version.
- Software upgrade: The existing software of the old control system was fully upgraded to current standards. Implementation took place in early March. The machine was only out of operation for a week and is now running to the full satisfaction of the customer.
Benefits
- Future-proof: By replacing obsolete and difficult-to-source parts, the reliability and availability of the machine are ensured in the long term, significantly reducing the risk of unplanned downtime.
- Modern network connection: The old serial port has been replaced with a fast and secure network connection, enabling more efficient data transfer.
- Compatibility with old machining programs: The old machining programs are compatible with the new control system.
- Remote diagnostics: Unisign can now remotely access the control system to quickly troubleshoot issues, minimizing downtime.
- Access to Siemens tool management: The new control system offers advanced tool management capabilities.
- Larger screen: A clear improvement for operators – more user-friendly and comfortable to use.
- Renewed keyboard: Enhanced ease of use for operators and improved ergonomics.

Future-proofing
Thanks to the retrofit project, the UNIPORT6 machine is now fully up-to-date. The machine has not only become more reliable and efficient but also future-proof.
This project demonstrates how Unisign Services revitalizes existing machines with technical expertise and customized solutions – minimizing downtime and maximizing customer satisfaction.
